I have recently interviewed a travel agent I know very well, my mom. She is the one who inspired me to travel and explore new places. She has been my travel partner since I was very young and I am so proud that she is following her dreams of being a travel agent. Here are her answers to some questions I believe are important to know about the person you are talking to on the phone when booking a trip.
Please introduce yourself and what you do:
My name is Melissa Plemons. I am a vacation consultant. I assist people in planning their leisure trips. My specialty is ocean cruising. However, I also book land resorts and tours.
Why did you choose to be a travel agent?
It is an occupation that allows me to work virtually from my home or any other location. I get to travel and share my passion with like-minded people.
What is your business model?
I am an associate for a franchise owner of CruiseOne. The main office supports my website, provides marketing and training, and other support services.
Generally, travel agents earn money from commissions paid by the travel suppliers (ei. the cruise lines and resorts).
What is the hardest thing about being a travel agent?
Keeping up with the ever changing industry. The inventory of cruises and resorts are constantly changing.
Why do you think people should travel?
To create memories and experience places beyond their front door. To have new experiences and try new thing. To relax. It’s perplexing to me that some people don’t to vacations, especially in light of the new research that people get more pleasure from experiences than things.
Here is her website if you are inspired to do a little traveling of you own and would like an expert to guide you to the perfect vacation:
